Chair of Modern Art History. Focus on Modernism
With the appointment of Prof. Susanne von Falkenhausen in 1993, the focus on modernism at the Department of Art and Visual History was consolidated and expanded to include contemporary art and methodology. Courses offered and research interests include the art of Western Europe and the USA since the French Revolution, with a particular focus on the function of the arts within totalitarian systems. This interest is accompanied by continuous engagement with the arts and media of the present day. Berlin’s lively art and gallery scene offers the perfect setting for regular tutorials with original works.
Another fundamental focus for modern art history research lies in gender research, a fact that is evident in the numerous conferences, publications and interdisciplinary seminars. A critical and innovative approach to the methodology of art history extends right through to more recent research activities and the pursuit of art as a visual and cultural practice from the Early Modern period to the present day.
