Hu, Wei was born in Shanghai in Nov. 1972. He studied Chinese traditional painting at Art Education Department of East China Normal University from 1991 to 1995 and received BA. From 1996 to 1998, he studied Chinese art at East China Normal University and received MA. In 1997, He worked as intern at the Research Department of Painting and Calligraphy of Shanghai Museum. Since 1998, he has been working at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University in shanghai. From 1999 to 2002, he continued his research on art theory of Chinese painting at Chinese Language and Literature Department of East China Normal University and received Doctor’s Degree. In 2004, he became Associate Professor at Tongji University. From July 2008 to June 2009, he made research on Early Italian Renaissance as visiting-scholar at the Institute of Art History, University Bern in Switzerland. In the Spring Semester of 2014, he taught as guest professor at the Institute of Art History, University Bern. In 2015, Hu, Wei was appointed as member of Advisory Committee for Humboldt-Forum in Berlin. In the summer semester of 2016, he taught as Rudolf -Arnheim Guest-professor at the Institute for Art and Visual History, Humboldt University, in Berlin.

His publications are mainly related to art history of China and his own artistic creation such as The Development of Thoughts of Painting during Yuan Dynasty, Tuan Jie Publish House, Beijing, 2010; Hu Wei (album of painting works), Liao Ning Fine Art Publish House, Shenyang, 2013.
