Peter Chametzky is Professor of Art History in the School of Visual Art and Design at the University of South Carolina. He is past Director of that school, as well as of the School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. His research focuses on 20th and 21st Century German art. His 1991 Ph.D., on Willi Baumeister, is from the City University of New York Graduate Center. Advisor was Rose-Carol Washton Long, and readers were Rosalind Krauss, Linda Nochlin, and Rosemarie Bletter. He is the author of Objects as History in 20th-Century German Art: Beckmann to Beuys (University of California Press, 2010), and has published essays in The Art Bulletin, Art in America, Kunstchronik, The Massachusetts Review, Modern Intellectual History, Museum and Society, and The Oxford Art Journal, among other journals, as well as in numerous anthologies and exhibition catalogues. His most recent publication is: “From Anti-Nazi Postcards to Anti-Trump Social Media: Laughter as Resistance, Opposition, or Cold Comfort?” in Art and Resistance in Germany, ed. Deborah Ascher Barnstone and Elizabeth Otto (New York: Bloomsbury Academic, November 2018), 193-216. He is in Berlin in October and November of 2018 with the support of the DAAD, pursuing a book project with the working title, “Turks, Jews, and Other Germans in Contemporary Art.” He is pictured here delivering the Festrede (keynote) at the opening of the Kunsthaus Dahlem Museum in Berlin on June 11, 2015.
