Terra Immersion Semesters

Deadline: January 8, 2018

Program description

The Terra Immersion Semester-program gives students who will have finished their MA-degree by August 2018 or who are in an early phase of their Ph.D. the opportunity to spend the fall semester of 2018 at a US-American university to immerse themselves in the academic culture of the US. The change of perspective will allow them to develop and expand their chosen subject and help locate their own research within new theoretical and methodological frameworks.

Eligible students will have identified a general topic in the field of American Art (c. 1500-1980) for their Ph.D. thesis, based on a transnational approach, or are inspired in their research by US-American specialists working at the respective host institutions. The students need to have an advisor at the Institute of Art and Visual Theory at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Successful candidates will spend one semester at one of the following US-American universities: CUNY Graduate Center; Harvard; Princeton; Stanford; University of California, Santa Barbara; University of Delaware; University of Pennsylvania; University of Southern California. As visiting scholars, they will take full advantage of the curriculum of their host institution. They will deepen their knowledge in the field of American art and their understanding of diverse methodologies of art history and visual studies, discuss their own approaches with US-American specialists, and cultivate a professional network for future collaborations.

Immediately before or after their immersion semester, the students will spend one month travelling to museums, collections, and archives of their choice, to look at original artworks and documents which would otherwise be inaccessible to them.

The successful candidate will receive a budget of $21,200 covering the following:
• round trip airfare ($ 1,200)
• housing and living expenses ($ 11,800)
• travel stipend ($ 5,000)
• payment to host institution ($ 2,500)
• health insurance supplement ($ 400)
• visa fee ($ 150)
