Heritage studies, perhaps even more so than other academic disciplines, focus upon story-telling as such (stories people tell each other, stories that get occluded, stories that rise up once again), but academic writing (often fiercely armored and narrowly siloed) tends to mitigate against narrative, such that academics often need to forge a new manner of speaking if they want to address the people they are writing about, or people who are generally interested in their research topics, rather than just each other.  For over 25 years, Lawrence Weschler, veteran of the New Yorker, author of over 20 books of narrative nonfiction, and director emeritus of the NY Institute for the Humanities at NYU, has been addressing precisely this challenge by way of his legendary “Fiction of Nonfiction” course (at Princeton, Columbia, Sarah Lawrence, Brown and NYU) in which he focuses, precisely, on the fictive elements of nonfiction narrative (form, structure, voice, tone, irony, freedom, subjectivity, open-ended capaciousness).  In this concentrated two-day writing lab, Weschler will elaborate on some of these themes, offer wide-ranging examples, and encourage discussion around the particular challenges facing participants as they themselves set out to bridge the gap.
