Two-year appointment from September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2025

Annual stipend: Euro equivalent of $57.900 (gross amount)

With funding from the Terra Foundation for American Art, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is offering a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in the art and visual culture of the United States (pre-1980). Applicants are expected to be at an early stage of their career, not currently holding, or having held, a permanent university position, and must have received their Ph.D. no more than four years prior to accepting the fellowship.

Appointed for two years, the postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to advance their research and career in the lively and international academic community of the Institute of Art and Visual History at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The postdoctoral fellow will liaise with the Terra Foundation Visiting Professor of American Art at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin and, either independently or in collaboration with the Visiting Professor, will organize symposia or other events that aim to internationalize the field of American art. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to teach one seminar per semester, thus helping to foster a greater understanding of the diverse histories and expanding narratives of American art among art history students in Germany, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. The teaching language will be English.

Applicants are asked to submit electronically, in one PDF file: (1) cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) research and teaching proposal (max. 4 pages), and (4) the contact details of two referees.
All documents are to be addressed to: terra.fellowship@hu-berlin.de.
