Silk: The Worm and the Fibre

In my lecture today I will concentrate  on the network of issues through which  14th-17th century Chinese elite actors comprehended silk and what were its consequences for the larger understanding of nature and material inventiveness. Deeply tied to craft practices and family farming, silk tackled almost all spheres of Chinese life. Historians of technology and art alike have shown the role of silk as an individual’s ideal and a communal emblem. My story emphasizes the changing epistemic and ontological propositions, practices and theories of making things and knowing affairs in China. Not only written account, but first and foremost the silk textile itself, i.e. changing iconography and inscription practices, reflect these shifts.

Im Rahmen der Vortragsreihe des DFG-Projektes “Networks: Textile Arts and Textility in a Transcultural Perspective (4th-17th Cent.)“ unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wolf.
