In ihrem frühesten Film zeichnet das erste feministische Filmkollektiv Indiens, Yugantar, den Streik und die gewerkschaftliche Organisierung von weiblichen Hausangestellten in Pune nach. Reenactment, Interviewsequenzen und Dokumentarfotografien kombinierend, fügt Molkarin (1981) die kollektive Erfahrung der von Geschlecht, Klasse und Kaste geprägten Arbeitsbedingungen in die Geschichte und Geschichtsschreibung der Streik- und Arbeiter*innenbewegung ein. Im Anschluss an die Filmvorführung wollen wir in eine offene Diskussion über die Potenziale und Herausforderungen des Mediums Film für die Darstellung von häuslicher Arbeit, ausbeuterischen Arbeitsbedingungen und aktivistischer Arbeit eintreten . Unsere Gäste, die Künstlerin und Filmwissenschaftlerin Pallavi Paul und die Wissenschaftlerin, Pädagogin und Kuratorin Nicole Wolf, werden ihre Perspektive auf Film als Instrument des Widerstands in der Frauen- und Arbeiter*innenbewegung im indischen Kontext in das Gespräch einbringen. Welche Bedeutung haben fiktionale und dokumentarische Formen in diesen Zusammenhängen? Wie lässt sich Molkarin zu zeitgenössischen und aktuellen künstlerischen Positionen in Beziehung setzen, die zunehmend prekäre und ausbeuterische Arbeitsbedingungen reflektieren? Und welche Beziehungen bestehen zwischen der im Film thematisierten häuslichen und aktivistischen Arbeit und der Arbeit des Filmkollektivs?

In their earliest film, India’s first feminist film collective Yugantar traces the strike and unionizing of female domestic workers in Pune. Combining reenactment, interview sequences and documentary photographs, Molkarin (1981) inserts the collective experience of working conditions shaped by gender, class and caste into the historic strike process. Following the film’s screening, we want to enter into an open discussion around the potentials and challenges of the cinematic medium for the representation of domestic labor, exploitative working conditions and activist work. Our guests artist and film scholar Pallavi Paul and scholar, pedagogue and curator Nicole Wolf will bring their expertise on film as a tool for resistance within feminist and labour movements in the Indian context into the conversation. What importance do fictional and documentary forms play? How might we relate the film to contemporary and current artistic positions increasingly reflecting on precarious and exploitative working conditions? And what are the relationships between domestic and activist work addressed in the film and the work of the film collective?
