Themes of contemporary European art: ‘Knights’ of Democracy
This lecture focuses on one of the topics I developed in my lecture series “Art in the European Union since the Treaty of Maastricht (1992)” as part of the Rudolf Arnheim Visiting Professorship for Humboldt University, namely perspectives on European Democracy. The concept of democracy is one of the most discussed concepts in the European Union today. It is now clear that the concept of democracy is not unambiguous, but is interpreted and practiced differently in different European member states, partly due to different, national or regional, cultural, historical and political developments.
In this lecture, I would like not so much to comment on this debate, but to show how European artists represent democracy, critically question it, or advocate creative democratic models and implement them in their artistic practice (e.g. JR, Grzegorz Paprzycki, Jonas Staal, and Wolfgang Tillmans). Artists are also discussed who do not make democracy a direct subject, but whose work provides such insight into a particular historical or political situation in a European member state that it helps to make another approach to democracy understandable or at least tangible (such as Irena Haiduk, Balázs Kicsiny, or Artur Żmijewski). Different views of democracy in art theory and political science will be mobilized (including texts by Boris Groys, Jürgen Habermas, Bojana Pejić, Piotr Piotrowski, Jacques Rancière, Slavoj Žižek, and Philip Manow), thus creating an interaction between analysis and interpretation of art in relation to contemporary European Democracy. This with the aim of bringing the democratic conflicts in the European Union closer and illuminating them through art.

Die Rudolf-Arnheim-Gastprofessur geht auf den Filmkritiker und Filmhistoriker Rudolf Arnheim zurück, der die Theorie des „denkenden Sehens“ und Gestaltens entwickelte. Eine hochrangige interdisziplinäre Jury beruft jährlich einen ausländischen Gastdozenten an die Humboldt-Universität. Gefördert wird diese Professur durch den Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst, die Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz und die Stiftung Brandenburger Tor. Im Sommersemester 2020 konnte der designierte Arnheim-Gastdozent seine Professur leider pandemiebedingt nicht antreten – sein Zeitraum ist auf ein anderes Jahr verschoben worden. Sjoukje van der Meulen hat ihre Professur im Wintersemester 2020/2021 nunmehr digital zugebracht und wir werden das Format entsprechend pandemischer Vorgaben ebenfalls ins Digitale verlegen.
