Kamila Kociałkowska is a specialist in the art of the Russian avant-garde. Her PhD thesis, at the University of Cambridge, explores the interactions between artists and censors in the early twentieth century. Using case studies ranging from redacted texts and censored manuscripts to defaced photographs, she explores how the aesthetics of censorship may have informed and inspired the distinctive aesthetics of the avant-garde and how, at different points in their careers, across different media, artists borrowed, adapted or referenced the censor’s strike in complex ways.
