Am 2. Juni 2025 findet in Berlin das IX. Internationale Doktorand*innenforum Kunstgeschichte des östlichen Europa statt, das von der Professur für Kunstgeschichte Osteuropas am Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in Kooperation mit dem Bundesinstitut für Kultur und Geschichte des östlichen Europa (Oldenburg), veranstaltet wird.

Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 2014 dient das Doktorand*innenforum als Plattform des Austauschs und der Vernetzung für Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen, die sich in ihren Forschungen mit der Kunst und Architektur der geografischen, historischen, politischen und soziokulturellen Räume im östlichen Europa auseinandersetzen.

Die internationale Plattform bietet Gelegenheit über inhaltliche, methodische und praktische Probleme der Dissertationsprojekte in einen Gedanken- und Erfahrungsaustausch zu treten, Kontakte zu knüpfen und Kompetenzen zu vernetzen.

The original 1981 Yale University Press edition of Taste and the Antique significantly shaped the field’s direction over four decades, influencing both academic research and curatorial practices.

The revised and expanded three-volume edition, featuring numerous newly commissioned photographs, substantially updates the scholarship with research from recent decades. It broadens the exploration of these works’ reception and influence, from Renaissance collectors to contemporary artists. The edition particularly examines how classical statues impacted European imagery beyond direct replication, including:

Their adaptation across diverse media
Their impact on art and architectural theory and pedagogy
Their influence on anatomical study and proportional theory
Their role in modernist culture and modern / postmodern popular culture
Their enduring presence in contemporary imagery and conceptions of the human body

This two-day conference aims to assess the current state of research, rethink established methodologies and explore possible future directions in the field. Its primary goal is to foster discussion among different generations of scholars whose research outputs are often separated by language and methodological barriers.

We invite proposals for twenty-minute papers on interrelated topics such as the following, outlined by the book or extending beyond it. Priority will be given to innovative papers focusing on the legacy of antique sculptural models in European/Colonial art and culture since the Renaissance:

Academy and Canon (examining their establishment, radical alteration, and dissolution in the modern era).

New Canons (the antique in modern and postmodern theoretical frameworks and practices).

Antique/Modern Bodies (classical statuary’s influence on human anatomical study; proportioned and disproportioned body concepts; the representation of the male and femalebody; physiognomy; conceptions of race and ethnicity).

Empire and its Enemies (political and racial implications of the antique).

Priorities and Display (the antique within modern museum contexts).

Restorations and Forgery (reconfigurations of the antique and notions of authenticity).

Narrative Patterns (the classical language of gesture, story-telling/narrative).

Please submit your title and abstract of no more than 200 words, along with a short biography (about 100 words — please do not send CVs) to Mattia Ciani (m [dot] ciani8 [at] student [dot] unisi [dot] it) by noon (BST), 15 May 2025. The abstract and biography should be combined in a single Word document and submitted as an email attachment. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.

Notification of the outcome will be communicated via email by 1 July 2025. We intend to publish the proceedings of the conference.

The Land Art Biennale “sā” was founded with a deep passion for landscapes and the
communities that inhabit them. Held in Ladakh, a region in the northern Indian
Himalayas, the Biennale actively engages people, particularly young adults, in
exploring the relationship between art and the environment. It aims to cultivate a
heightened sensitivity to and a deeper connection with nature through artistic
expression, fostering meaningful interactions between the local community, artists,
and audiences. For its second edition in June 2024, artists were invited to submit
proposals under the theme “The Future of Immersive Land Art / Immersive Land Art
and the Future,” incorporating site-specific installations, sculptures, and, for the first
time, immersive audiovisual performances. Following the film’s screening, we aim to
engage in an open discussion about the potential and challenges of creating and
experiencing art on-site in the South Asian context, as well as how this Biennale may
present new perspectives on Land Art.

Wenn Sie an der Veranstaltung teilnehmen möchten, reichen Sie bitte bis Ende Februar 2025 ein Exposé ein, in dem Sie den Forschungsgegenstand und die Fragestellung Ihrer Dissertation kurz beschreiben, die methodischen Ansätze Ihrer Arbeit erörtern und auch auf potenzielle Probleme eingehen. Bitte fügen Sie einen kurzen CV bei, ggf. mit einer Publikationsliste.

Aus den Einsendungen werden acht Promotionsprojekte ausgewählt, die auf dem Forum in Form von Vorträgen (à 20 Min.) präsentiert werden. Die ausgewählten Sprecher*innen werden bis zum 20. März 2025 benachrichtigt. Vorbehaltlich der Gewährung von Fördermitteln werden die Reise- und Übernachtungskosten für die Vortragenden übernommen.

Für alle weiteren Teilnehmer*innen besteht die Möglichkeit, ihr Promotionsprojekt vor Ort kurz vorzustellen (5 Min.). Zudem werden die Exposés auf der Website des Forums publiziert (http://www.kunstgeschichte.hu-berlin.de/institut/lehrstuehle/lehrstuhl-fuer-kunstgeschichte-osteuropas/internationales-doktorandenforum/).

Die Konferenzsprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch.

The IX International Doctoral Forum on Art History of Eastern Europe will take place in Berlin on 2 June 2025, organised by the Chair of Art History of Eastern European Art History at the Institute for Art and Visual History at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, in cooperation with the Federal Institute for Culture and History of Eastern Europe (Oldenburg).

Since its inauguration in 2014, the Doctoral Forum has provided a platform for exchange and networking for young scholars whose research focuses on art of the geographical, historical, political, and socio-cultural spaces of Eastern Europe. The Forum provides an opportunity for exchange of ideas and experiences, for contacts and for sharing expertise on the subject, methodology and practice of dissertation projects.

Doctoral candidates working in the field of Eastern European art history (or a related academic field) are invited to present their dissertation projects. If you are interested in participating in the Forum, please submit an exposé by the end of February 2025, briefly describing the subject matter and the research question of your dissertation, outlining the methodological approaches of your work and addressing potential problems. Please attach a short curriculum vitae including a list of publications, if available.

Eight doctoral projects will be selected from the submissions for presentation at the Forum (20 min.). The selected speakers will be notified by 20 March 2025. Subject to funding, travel and accommodation costs for the speakers will be covered.

All other participants will have the opportunity to briefly introduce themselves and their research project on-site (5 min.). In addition, there will be an online presentation of the exposés on the Forum’s website (http://www.kunstgeschichte.hu-berlin.de/institut/lehrstuehle/lehrstuhl-fuer-kunstgeschichte-osteuropas/internationales-doktorandenforum/)

The conference languages are German and English.

The Centre for Advanced Study inherit. heritage in transformation, a BMBF-funded Käte Hamburger Kolleg based at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, is pleased to invite applications for its fellowship program, which will run from 1 October 2026 to 31 July 2027. This opportunity is open to both experienced and early-career postdoctoral researchers, as well as artists, filmmakers, and curators. The deadline for submission is 14 April 2025.

The Centre explores historical, contemporary, and potential future transformations in heritage and hosts up to fifteen international fellows each year to pursue their research. The topic for applications for fellowships for 2026-7 is Addressing Heritage Loss. Applications should also relate to one or more of our guiding themes: decentring the west. decentring the human, and transforming value.

Researchers and topics from areas currently underrepresented in heritage scholarship, including the global South and Eastern Europe, are especially encouraged to apply.

Am Ende des 20. und zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts gab es eine ungeheure Aufbruchstimmung in der Welt der Museen, beflügelt von zahlreichen Museumsneubauten und Expansionsplänen. Museen gehörten zu den Vorzeige- und Prestigeprojekten fast jeder Metropole der Welt. Mittlerweile ist Ernüchterung eingetreten. Steigende Energiepreise haben teilweise zu Beschränkungen der Öffnungszeiten geführt, Besucherzahlen sind noch immer nicht auf den Stand von vor der Pandemie zurückgekehrt und die bisher gut sprudelnden staatlichen Förderquellen drohen zu versiegen. Seit geraumer Zeit geht es daher mehr um Fragen der Nachhaltigkeit als um Neu- und Ausbaupläne. Wie kann ein neues, jüngeres und diverseres Publikum gewonnen werden? In der Vorlesungsreihe stellen renommierte Museumsdirektor:innen und Leitungspersonen von Museen und Ausstellungshäusern in und um Berlin ihre Überlegungen zur Zukunft ihrer sehr unterschiedlichen Institutionen zur Diskussion. Zusätzlich wird ein junges preisgekröntes Architektenbüro über die Bauaufgabe Museum aus heutiger Sicht nachdenken und eine Museumsdirektorin aus Kyiv über die Zukunft ihres Hauses in Kriegszeiten.
