Ying Sze Pek is the Terra Foundation for American Art Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Her research explores how migration and colonial histories are imbricated in the formation of European and global artistic modernisms.

Her current book-length project examines ideas of “re-education,” learning, and unlearning in West German film exhibition and education. A key figure in this research is the African American filmmaker Skip Norman (1993-2015), who made Black Nationalist films while studying at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb). As a scholar working at the intersection of modern and contemporary art history and film and media studies, Pek is also completing her book-in-progress on the oeuvre of filmmaker, artist, and theorist Hito Steyerl.

Prior to her tenure as a Terra Fellow, Pek was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
